High Tea or Afternoon Tea?
There has been confusion as to the correct term for an indulgent afternoon snack of delicious morsels combined with the best quality tea and perhaps a glass of Champagne. Is it High Tea or Afternoon Tea?
We decided to investigate as guests of The George Hotel in Perth for their enticing Grand Cru High Tea but first did some research ourselves.
British High Tea was originally an afternoon meal for the working man whilst standing or seated on high stools. Hence the name “High Tea”. There was no delicate china or cucumber sandwiches but meat, ale and strong tea
Afternoon Tea, however, was popularized by the Duchess of Bedford, who was said to suffer afternoon “hunger spells” The best tea in fine bone china was served along with delicate sandwiches and petite cakes.
In current times, the distinction is blurred along with the name of either High Tea or Afternoon Tea. High Tea sounds more sophisticated than its origin which is perhaps why it is the popular name used by most establishments. Either way, we were very happy to sample the delights of the George Hotel for their High Tea.
Arriving in this grand and elegant hotel, we were greeted with a glass if amazing GH Mumm Champagne. A real treat to start with and absolutely delicious!
Bite size scones with vanilla infused cream was served first to whet our appetite.
The main food tower arrived later and was just as decadent as we had anticipated. Warm petite quiches, croissants on the lower level, delicate cucumber sandwiches and salmon bites in the middle and the pièce de résistance on the top with macarons , chocolate cups and lemon tarts.
Surprisingly, we managed to finish all of the of scrumptious food and were happy to partake of a delicate tea from the generous selection offered.
We left The George Hotel very satisfied and were surprised that we could even eat that much food! It is a decadent way to spend an afternoon and highly recommended whether you chose to call it High Tea or Afternoon Tea.
