American BBQ Tour of Perth
Smoked, marinated and slow cooked. Just the way we love our BBQ and this unique tour highlights some of Perth’s best American style BBQ restaurants and bars.
Paul, one of the owners and guide on this tour, met us with the company mini-bus at the Bell Tower in Perth for the start of the day of food, food and more food. A progressive lunch visiting Perth’s best American BBQ bars and restaurants. We were warned to have a light breakfast and this advice certainly was sound.
Our first stop was in Highgate at a restaurant full of American charm and ambiance. Although arriving before the traditional lunch crowd, we were in anticipation of the carnivore feast ahead.
To kick start the American experience, a delicious plate of spiced popcorn was presented as we ordered our drinks. Yes, an early start but we were now on USA time!
Our selection at this stop was an impressive sharing platter of pulled pork, slow cooked brisket served with Espresso BBQ sauce, smokey beans and an amazing corn bread with maple syrup butter. All were extremely tasty but our favourite was the slow cooked brisket. Melt in your mouth goodness.
On to our next stop and a change of style. This hidden gem is more like a traditional American diner surrounded with quirky memorabilia.
The chef here has proudly displayed his Bachelor of Barbecue Science which he received in Kansas. This promised to be a good stop! Sadly, the chef was not prepared to share his secret recipes but it was interesting to see how their food was prepared and have an up close view of the mammoth oven with attached smoker.
Porky’s is home to a huge imported BBQ oven, where meat can be smoked and slow cooked for up to 16 hours.
The ribs and brisket here did not disappoint. Smokey and tender and served with an accompaniment of a most unusual side of Deep Fried Mac n Cheese. Surprisingly amazing!
Leaving in a food coma, our next stop would give us a break from eating and instead sample some American bourbon in the form of a cocktail infused with pecans.
Dominion League is home to over 260 different whiskeys. A street level bar with speak-easy style, we enjoyed the ambiance whilst sipping our tasty cocktails.
On to our last stop for the day and thankfully the break has given us the encouragement to challenge another food feast.
Old Faithful Bar and BBQ was the first traditional smokehouse in Perth. With a rustic old American decor we looked forward to sampling their delights. Yet another giant platter was presented with twice-fried chicken wings, blue cheese sauce and pulled pork sliders.
Just when we thought we would never eat again, American style desert arrived. Peanut butter cheesecake and cherry pie! Sensational.
Our tour ended here and we left with full bellies and a new appreciation for American BBQ. Slow cooked and marinated is the way for us from now on!
