A Cruisy Day in the Swan Valley
Un jour sans vin est comme un jour sans soleil – day without wine is like a day without sunshine
Did someone say wine “tasting”? More like wine drinking with fabulous food on Captain Cook’s Famous Perth Wine Cruise where the wine flowed freely an hour after departure.
We departed Perth on an uncharacteristically foggy autumn morning for an enjoyable seven hour return cruise to Sandalford Estate. As a local of Perth, a Swan Valley wine tour had been on my bucket list for years so this was an opportunity to indulge in a day of food and wine.
As the sun began to shine, we were entertained with interesting commentary as we made our way along the Swan River. It didn’t take long until the wine bottles were opened and we were tempted with a superb board of Blue Cow Cheeses to accompany the Western Australian wines selected.
Our cruise along the Swan River was peaceful and idyllic and with a wonderful display of Australian flora and fauna for us to enjoy until we reached our destination at Sandalford Estate.
We were met at the winery by our host, who gave us a tour highlighting the manufacturing process of these iconic Western Australian wines. Sandalford is one of Australia’s oldest privately owned winery and holds numerous awards for their quality wines.
As our appetite for more wine and anticipation of a delicious lunch increased, we were treated to a tasting of some of the more popular Sandalford wines. This was a fun way to learn the techniques of tasting and as new connoisseurs we rated our wines.
Lunch was just as amazing as it sounded. I chose the Humpty Doo Baramundi which was generous, tasty and moist. My travel companion for the day, son James, devoured his choice of Free Range Chicken Breast.
Apre- lunch there was more wine tasting at the cellar door along with the opportunity to try some fortified wines. My favourite was the award winning, divine liquid gold, Sandalera.
Waddling back to our boat for the return journey to Perth, we were greeted by a desert selection with much needed tea and coffee! It didn’t take long though until the wines were opened again and if were hadn’t had our fill already, there was a selection of wines to entice us whilst we were entertained by the talented Grace.
A big thank you for such a terrific day to Captain Cook Cruises for inviting us on Perth’s Famous Wine Cruise and I would thoroughly recommend this day on the Swan River to both locals and any visitors to Western Australia who enjoy good wine and good food.
At $169, this tour gives great value for money with a relaxing cruise, winery tour, delicious food, wine tasting and free-flowing wine. ( Just don’t plan to drive home!)
